Revolutionary CARS project improves operational and clinical efficiency of Ambulance Services

Information Technology is the key to delivering the recommendations of the Bradley Report.  However, Ambulance Services are trying to implement reforms without the supporting infrastructure because the main elements of the National Programmes, including the NHS Care Record System, are yet to be completed. As a result, many Ambulance Services are trying to fulfill clinical and operational obligations with very little information on which to base their decisions.

The report gave five general recommendations:

NHS Clinical EffectivenessIn partnership with South Central Ambulance Service, e-Docs UK has developed a new Clinical Audit Reporting System (CARS) that will enable other Ambulance Services to improve:

Clinical Effectiveness – CARS helps ensure that the appropriate care is given to meet patient needs in the right setting. This includes patients who are frequent users of the Ambulance Service, who should be receiving a more appropriate managed package of care.

Clinical Supervision – CARS provides a hierarchy of control and audit to monitoring the practice of clinicians. It will ensure that quality and consistency of care is achieved without incurring any unwarranted risk to the patient.

Clinical Development – CARS provides clinicians with the tools to develop their skills and ensure that their knowledge is up to date and used appropriately. A new development in 2008 will give clear visibility of capabilities and support skills progression to new roles.
